PlayStation 1

The first PlayStation console was launched in Japan in 1994 and was later released in North America and Europe in 1995.  The PlayStation was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, a division of Sony Corporation.

Sony's PlayStation was born out of a failed partnership with Nintendo in the early 1990s. Ken Kutaragi and Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan led the console's development, with additional input from the United Kingdom. The PlayStation's design was all about 3D polygon graphics, which was a major selling point. Sony made sure that game production was streamlined, making it easy for third-party developers to jump on board.

The PlayStation was a game-changer for Sony, marking their dominance in the video game industry. It was a massive success, selling over 100 million units in less than a decade.
